The opening of photo exhibition of Ivan Bla¾ev "Dreaming Macedonia”

1st Festival of Macedonian Culture, June 8-11, 2007.

Ivan Bla¾ev is one of the best young Macedonian photographers. „His photographs are like an interactive process without dates and places, where the history still evolves and disperses in unexpected directions”.

Exposition: June 8-22, 2007

Ivan Bla¾ev „Dreaming Macedonia”:
In 1991 Macedonia as a result of the nation wide referendum declared its independence from Yugoslavia. Since, the country has gone through many different stages, from the “oasis of peace”, through a “powder keg” to an “another Balkan war conflict zone”. Undisputable that all this was happening to the country, it felt that the media (both local and international) was always painting a very stereotypical image of the country and the people living here, as if only to fit their personal (political) agendas and definitions. Convinced that there must be more to it than what only ends up on the front pages, I embarked on a journey in search for other aspects of Macedonians’ everyday life during these difficult times.

Two years into the making, Macedonia Dreaming is a documentary photo-essay creating an intimate portrait of a country and its people, outside of the stereotypical image of a society at a crossroad, stuck in a transitional period not leading anywhere, and wider than the picture formed by the media of an everyday life burdened by coruption scandals and political games.

This photo essay represents a voyage during which places and events do not change dramaticaly, but rather, what is emphasized is the lyrical quality of the photographs and the subtle presentation of reality.

Coinciding with the 15th anniversary of Macedonia’s independence, the photo-essay is not a retrospective of the years of independence, but more specifically, it offers a perspective of a country that is beautiful, paradoxical, and unusuall at a very specific point in its history.
