The Thing
This Swedish-Norwegian band was founded in February 2000 during a series of concerts and recording sessions in Stockholm. The members are well known on jazz scene from the cooperation with Peter Brotzmann, Ken Vandermark, Joe McPhee, Paul Lovensen or Barry Guy. The Thing, next to Atomic, is one of the most interesting improvising bands from Scandinavia. The style of The Thing comes from German, British and American tradition of 60s free jazz, considering especially Don Cherry’s productions (who lived in Stockholm for several years). All the records of The Thing (The Thing, Action Jazz, Live At Bla, Garage, The Thing with Joe McPhee and Cato Salsa Experience – Sounds Like A Sandwich, Two Bands And A Legend and I See You Baby) received great reviews. “All About Jazz” has written: “… the concerts of those three great improvisers are a unique mix of tradition, avant-garde, energy and madness. As a result we receive a dose of an amazing music that won’t let anybody be indifferent.”
