Free Fall
The instrumental composition and the name of the band refer to probably the best Jimmie Giuffre’s record published in 1963. But the music that Free Fall presents is not a direct homage to this great artist. Ken Vandermark, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Håvard Wiik come from very different traditions than the musicians from this trio from early 60s (Jimmie Giuffre, Steve Swallow and Paul Bley). Their methods of composition and improvisation based on the experiences of evolution of jazz music after the golden years of Jimmie Giuffre (AACM, Anthony Braxton, European free jazz school with Evan Parker, Derek Bailey, Misha Mengelberg and Peter Brotzmann, and more recent with Ab Baars, William Parker, Joe and Mat Maneri, also with Mats Gustafsson or Joe Morris) let the artists to have a completely new look on improvising music.
