Michael Ackerman
1967. Born September 3, 1967 in Tel Aviv, Israel.

1974. Family moves to New York City.

1985. Enters the University of New York in Albany and begins to take pictures after joining a student run photography organization. Ignores school and photographs obsessively.


1990. Leaves university to return to New York City. Photographs on the streets, nightclubs and waterfronts of the city. Sets up a darkroom in his mother's kitchen in Queens. First one person exhibition at Albany Center Galleries.

1990-1993. Continually works in various areas in New York City and contributes a weekly picture to New York Perspectives, a free paper distributed on the streets, bars and shops of the city.

1993. Makes first voyage to India. Photographs in many cities across the country but is especially moved by Benares and returns there repeatedly.

1994. Works as an intern for The Village Voice. Projects first slideshow to students at the University of New York in Albany. Would go on to explore the slideshow form as a way to present his work with music as a continuous progression of images. Meets Barbara Millstein, curator of photography at the Brooklyn Museum who buys 3 prints for the museum's collection and offers strong encouragement. Makes second voyage to India and works primarily in Benares. On return to New York meets experimental filmmakers Adam and Jem Cohen, resulting in a strong friendship and artistic collaboration.

1996. Meets Margaret Bodell who gives Ackerman his first exhibition in New York City. Travels to Italy for first exbition in Europe at Museo Ken Damy in Brescia. Begins working with Elena Ceratti of Grazia Neri Agency/Gallery in Milan. Shares a darkroom with photographers Teru Kuwayama, Gigi Cohen and Sean Sime in New York City. Photographs on the streets of Times Square as it is transformed into a tourist's haven.

1997. The Last Days of Times Square is exhibited in Margaret Bodell Gallery. Projects slideshow at The Community Garden in downtown Manhattan. This becomes an annual collaboration with various photographers including Eric Wolf and Teru Kuwayama and musicians such as Mark Mulcahy and Cat Power. Makes final voyage to Benares and prints close to one hundred photographs from his various times there with thoughts of creating a book. Begins photographing in Cabbagetown, Atlanta for the project that will become Smoke. Travels to Europe and meets and begins to work with Christian Caujolle, director of Gallerie VU in Paris, France. Meets Robert Delpire who agrees to publish the Benares pictures under the title End Time City.

1998. One person exhibitions in Berlin, Vigo, Bobigny and New York City. Invited to photograph in Poland by Slawomir Sierzputowski, the director of photography of Gazeta Wyborcza. Works in Warsaw, Krakow, Katowice and Auschwitz. Recieves The International Center of Photography Infinity Award - Young Photographer.

1999. End Time City is published in France by Nathan/Delpire and internationally by Scalo. Has first one person exhibition in Gallerie VU, as well as exhibitions in New York City, Honfleur, Groningen, Milan, Brest and Madrid. Amnesty International mounts a travelling exhibition of The Last Days of Times Square throughout France. End Time City is awarded the Prix Nadar for best photography book of the year.

1999-2002. Works repeatedly in Naples, Marseille, Berlin, Katowice and Havana.

2000. One person exhibitions in Zurich, Vevey, Nyon, Marseille and Rotterdam. The photographs from Smoke are featured in a film by Jem Cohen and Pete Sillen titled Benjamin Smoke. Begins work on second book titled Fiction. Teaches at the Tuscan Photographic Workshops near Siena and in El Centro Del Imagen, Mexico City.

2001. Fiction is published by Delpire in France and internationally by Gina Kehayoff. Prepares his second one person exhibition in Gallerie VU and spends nights in Le Petit Bar in Paris making Polaroid portraits of the clients.

2002-2003. Continues the portrait project of men in bars. The Polaroids are transformed into larger prints and included as a panel in one person exhibitions in Pantherei Gallery, Munich and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Belgrade and The Naarden Photography Biennial. Teaches workshops in Tuscany, Mexico, Venice and New York City. Moves to Krakow, Poland.

2004. One person exhibitions at Gallerie Vu, Paris, Kerrigan Cambell Art projects, New York and Alchemia Gallerie, Krakow. Prepares first draft of a book, tenatively titled Half Life. Teaches workshop at The International Center of Photography, New York. 2005. One person exhibitions at Hermes Gallery, New York, Van Der Grinten Gallerie, Koln, Germany.

2006. One person exhibition at Recontre d'Arles, France, FAS Gallerie, Berlin, Germany, Kronika, Bytom, Poland.
