The Best Free Jazz
Ken Vandermark (USA) – reeds
Tim Daisy (USA) – drums
Ken Vandermark and Tim Daisy almost at the beginning of their cooperation have created Vandermark/ Daisy Duo project.
Their first concert took place at the end of 2002. Music formula they’ve chosen is a result of two fascinations. The first one is duos: Don Cherry with Ed Blackwell, Anthony Braxton with Max Roach or Peter Broetzman with Han Bennink – light and easy communication, simplicity and beauty come from Blackwell and Cherry; attention in the structure of pieces but the same time rhythmic complication come from Braxton and Roach; energy and intransigence come from Broetzman and Bennik. What they bring to their duo is that, what always was Vandermark’s recognition sign – trans and rock motor activity. The other thing is formal relation between improvisation and composition based on the idea of freely improvised music (John Cage and Morton Feldman’s idea) – in this case that means leaving ornamental character of the jazz improvisation, which is no longer a part of composition during its performance, but the composition is the effect of shared improvisation. The composition is a process that is being created during the concert with the public as a witness.
In 2007 the first and only so far record of Ken Vandermark/ Tim Daisy Duo, “August Music”, has been published in the limited circulation of 200 copies. It is live recordings from Empty Bottle club in Chicago.
